Yesterday, by a vote of 44 – 3, the Pennsylvania State Senate confirmed Governor Corbett’s nomination of Gary Tennis to be the first Secretary of the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Earlier in the day the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee unanimously reported his nomination out of committee.
Representative Gene DiGirolamo was the prime sponsor of HB 1186 which was introduced April 23, 2009. HB 1186 passed the House by a vote of 191 – 3 on May 25, 2010, and the Senate by a vote of 42 – 8 on July 2, 2010. Act 50 of 2010 was approved by Governor Rendell on July 2, 2010.
When Rep. DiGirolamo sat down with Roy a couple of weeks ago he discussed the new Department and shared his thoughts on the impending confirmation of Secretary Tennis, and his hope that other related programs being administered in other state agencies would be brought under the new department’s umbrella.
